Message from the Manager

          Dear Members!
Welcome back! It’s great to have the new school year started and to see all the activity on campus and at the Club.
We have been preparing for the new year with new dishes in the Kerr Dining Room and Bar, as well as some new and exciting wines by the glass. Come by to enjoy your favorite wine and your favorite sports on the big screen. We’re also starting a series of international buffets in the Kerr Dining Room on Friday evenings.
New tables have been installed in the Lauderbeck and Lewis-Latimer Rooms, and a newly framed portrait of a group of Nobel laureates is being hung in the Seaborg Room. Watch for other improvements around the Club.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Wine Tasting on the Glade

Yes, the Fall Wine Tasting on the Glade is almost here again! On September 15th join the happy hordes and enjoy sipping a wide range of wines from quality wineries. Each time we hold one of these events members find new favorites and have the opportunity to order them at extra special prices. Your editor is carefully saving for just the right people the few bottles she has left of a classic Riesling from Germany that she picked up at the last tasting and is still wondering at. After the tasting (beginning at 5:30 p.m.) enjoy a great dinner and live music. All for $42 a person all-inclusive. Reserve now at extension 224.

Golden Girlfriends Luncheon

This group will continue to meet bi-monthly throughout the academic year. Here’s the schedule: October 17th, November 29th, February 14th, April 19th, June 12th. All widows of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.

Bargain Dinners Continue

Come any weekday evening before 6:30 and get a three-course dinner for the remarkable price of $13.99 including choice of soup or salad, and dessert. Book reservations at 540-5678, extension 0.

Art Show of the Month – September

Our artist for the month will be Bill Jolly, Professor Emeritus in the College of Chemistry. Bill will be showing his highly unusual photographs. Beginning in the late 30’s with a child’s interest in cameras, the images show growth – both of the chemist and of the artist/photographer – culminating in the development of a chemical process, solar solarization, that produces a non-dye-based impression of color as well as a daguerreotype-like effect he calls silver mirroring. The effects are not obtained with computer image manipulation. For more information, see his book Solarization Demystified, or write to wljolly@berkeley.edu.

Halloween Costume Ball

On October 27th a new event is entering the Club’s calendar – our first Halloween Masked Ball! In the hopes this will become an annual event, we are planning a great party, with a reception beginning at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and dancing to follow. Who knows what other surprises will be in store? Start planning your costume now. Need an idea for a costume? Check the young lady to the right who has discarded her mask. The cost? $35 per person. Reserve at extension 224.

Dinner Menu in the Bar

We are now offering the opportunity for informal, light meals in the Bar on weekday evenings. If you need a quick snack before returning to your department for an early evening meeting, you can now do it in the peace of the Club Bar. The new Bar menu is already in place – check it out!

An Election is Coming!

On October 19 Nelson Poulsby of our Political Science Department and pollster Melvin Field will discuss the upcoming election and answer questions from the audience. The event will be moderated by Jerry Lubenow.
Our distinguished analysts will address California races and issues, as well as the national battle for control of the Congress. They will touch on the war in Iraq and the economy, the nationalization of state campaigns, the framing of issues, and the impact of turnout in an electorate that seems increasingly disaffected.
This event is being co-sponsored with the U.C. Retirement Center’s Learning in Retirement Program. The panel will begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Cost: $15. Reserve at extension 224.

Parking Changes

Unfortunately the University’s Parking and Transportation people have just raised the parking rates to $10 a car in University parking structures. This means we can no longer offer free parking for member events after September. We apologize for this inconvenience beyond our control. Members can reserve spaces by purchasing permits for $10 at the front desk. We wish it wasn’t so!

Winemaker’s Dinner with a Difference!

The Wine Committee will host a wine and spirits evening on November 9th with St. George Spirits and Edmunds St. John winery. Jorg Rupf, founder of St. George and Hangar One, will be on-hand for an evening featuring cocktails made with Hangar One vodka and St. George eaux de vie and liqueurs towards the end of the evening. The dinner will showcase wines by Steve Edmunds of Edmunds St. John, a local winemaker and musician who last came to the Club in 2003. We expect to present an Edmunds St. John wine in two incarnations: first with dinner as it was bottled by the winery, and then as transformed by St. George’s distillation. Steve is a great guitarist! Will there be music in the air? We’ll see! Reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7. Cost: $65 per person, all inclusive.

Football at the Club

Remember that every Saturday that Cal plays at home during the football season, the Club is open for pre-game lunches and drinks, and post-game snacks and cocktails. Beat the crowd, arrive early, and enjoy a short walk to the stadium.

Dinners, etc.

New! Friday evening International Buffet dinners in the Kerr Dining Room: dine around the world at the Club! Come by and try this new offering soon. We’re also continuing our early-bird Bargain Dinners: from 5 to 6:30 – a great pre-show meal for only $13.99. We now also have revised lunchtime menus in place in the dining room, with exciting new choices, as well as new wine-by-the-glass selections in the bar. Our kitchens can also provide Take Out Lunches that may be ordered by phone or fax. With enough notice, we can arrange delivery on campus.

Breakfast Bargain

We are continuing the Club’s bargain breakfast special. From 7 to 10 a.m. you can come by the Kerr Room and for $2.99 enjoy juice, eggs, coffee and toast. Pickup a newspaper on the way to the campus and relax after that commute or uphill bike ride. And tell your friends! You do not have to be a member to take advantage of this special.
