Message from the Manager

It is good to see everyone back on the campus. There are the familiar faces and a lot of new ones. Welcome to your Club! New membership folders will soon be going out to eligible faculty and staff. We hope that our members will encourage campus newcomers to join the Club. We have been busy over the summer with weddings (which help to balance our budget) and member events. We also now have in place our new salad bar and sandwich line. They meet all the health codes and also look good. Check them out the next time you’re here for lunch. We also put into place a new computer system that makes all areas of the Club operation more efficient. I’m looking forward to seeing you and serving you in the new academic year. Please feel free to contact me if I can help you with any Club related problems. Thank you.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Fall Wine Tasting on the Glade

What a way to introduce potential new members to the Club! Why not invite a couple of non-members to this ever popular event and give them a folder on membership at the same time? Or choose someone to whom you owe a dinner and take care of one of those social obligations that pile up during the year. Start the evening by tasting some of the many wines on offer from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the Glade. Order forms will be available if you find something you like. Then move indoors for dinner, with dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. Date: September 16th. Cost: $42 per person, all inclusive. Reserve now.

Oktoberfest Draws Near!

Traditions, traditions. Here it is, October again, and we dig out the dirndls and the lederhosen. How’s your yodeling? There’s still time to practice! Join Club members on October 14th for a reprise of one of the Club’s more popular events. Our chef will be planning a special buffet dinner to accompany selected beers (and wines). Then dance the evening away to live music. Reception will begin at 6 p.m. and the buffet dinner will be at 7. Reserve now at 540-5678, ext. 224. Cost is $40 per person, all inclusive.

Art Show of the Month - September

We are continuing the August show by Patrick Hayashi. As we pointed out last month, he served the campus for more than 40 years, moving from mail carrier to Associate President under UC President Dick Atkins. To prepare for his retirement in 2004, he started studying art through UC Extension in 1998. He claims that he “foolishly” chose to work in a variety of mediums ranging from pen/ink, graphite and pastel to watercolor and oil. He says modestly, “What I lack in depth, I make up for in breadth.” The works on display span his 7-year artistic journey. He winces when he looks at some early works, but put them in to show that even someone who starts late in life can improve through hard work. Dr. Hayashi appreciates the chance to display his pieces. He can be reached by e-mail at pathayashi@earthlink.net.

New Dinner Menu in the Bar

In addition to the changes in service in the Kerr Dining Room, we are now offering the opportunity for informal, light meals in the Bar on weekday evenings. If you need a quick hamburger before returning to your department for an early evening meeting, you can now do it in the peace of the Club Bar. The new Bar menu is already in place – check it out.

Where’s the Supreme Court Going?

Another in the Club’s highly successful evenings of early evening talk/discussions followed by dinner. On September 7th join Professors John Yoo and Goodwin Liu of Boalt Law School for a presentation of some of the various opinions on matters concerning the Supreme Court – from its makeup to its role in today’s world. The reception will start at 5:30 p.m., with talk and discussion at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7. Our speakers represent differing views on the Supreme Court, and we look forward to a lively discussion. The cost is $30 per person. We anticipate discussion from the floor and during the meal. There are still places available. Reserve at 540-5678, ext. 224.

Bargain Dinners Continue

As the concert and theater season starts to heat up, it is time to start enjoying the bargain dinners in the Kerr Room, especially before events at Zellerbach Hall. This is the biggest dining bargain in Berkeley. And now you can enjoy our new evening look in the Kerr Room. Come any weekday evening before 6:30 and enjoy a three-course dinner for the remarkable price of $13.95, including a choice of soup or salad, and dessert. A pleasant summer evening spot. Reservations at 540-5678, extension 0.

Golden Girlfriends

The next luncheon meeting of this group will be on Wednesday, October 12th. Members will be getting invitations in the mail. This group is open to all widows of members. A warm and welcoming group. For information, call Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.

Happy Hour

From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, you can join your friends in the Bar for a gin and tonic, a beer, a glass of good wine, or a mineral water.

New Look in the Kerr Dining Room

On August 15th we launched both a new dinner menu and a complete new look to the Kerr Dining Room after 5 p.m. The wait staff enjoy their new maroon shirts and the color scheme provides an elegant setting for a quiet dinner. Why not come in soon and enjoy the new look and the new dishes?

A Sad Loss to the Club

We learned just before going to press that our oldest member (in both senses of the word) passed away on August 29th. Professor Murray Emeneau, founder of the Linguistics Department, was 101 years old. Murray was a dear friend to his students and colleagues, and tried never to miss a Christmas Party. He was able to be with us at last year’s festivities. We shall miss him.

Football at the Club

Remember that every Saturday that Cal plays at home during the football season, the Club is open for pre-game lunches and drinks, and post-game snacks and cocktails. Beat the crowd, park early, and enjoy a short walk to the stadium

Breakfast Bargain

We are continuing the Club’s bargain breakfast special. From 7:30 to 10 a.m. you can come by the Kerr Room and for $2.99 enjoy juice, eggs, coffee, and toast. Pick up a newspaper on the way to the campus and relax after that commute or uphill bike ride. And tell your friends! You do not have to be a member to take advantage of this special.
