March 8th - Winemaker's Dinner
April 5th - Dinner with the Wine Committee
|
Message from the Manager
We are all busy preparing for our upcoming Centennial celebration on March 15th. I hope you are making plans to attend this wonderful event. Everyone who attended February's Valentine dinner and dance and the Jazz evening had a good time. These have become two of the most popular events on the Club's calendar. I'd like to thank all ourstaff for doing such a great job for all our members and guests as they work to make our member events enjoyable for all. The salad bar area now has new curtains. We hope you like them. The management and House Committee are continuing to work on new projects. I will keep you informed as they develop. Thanks again for all your comments. They are much appreciated.
Elections and Annual Meeting
On Monday, March 4th, the Nominations Committee will post on the bulletin board the list of candidates who have agreed to run for the three vacancies on the Board of Directors (two for-two-year terms and one for one year). In the course of the month, members will receive ballots and background information on candidates. The results of the election will be announced at the Club's annual meeting - at 12 noon on April 10th in the Howard Room (complimentary coffee and cake). Over the past few years our Board of Directors has had to reach many thoughtful decisions about Club policies and future actions. To be a member of the board is both an honor and a responsibility. We are fortunate that so many busy people agree to undertake this task. Please take time to vote and participate in this effort.
Winemaker's Dinner
There are still a few spaces
available for the March 8th dinner with Iron Horse winery. The reception
will start at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Total cost for the evening
is $55 per person, plus tax and tip.
At these events, wineries
send representatives to present some of the finest wines they produce and
offer members the opportunity to order at highly advantageous prices. Sometimes
the wines presented are hard to find on the open market. To reserve, call
Mark at extension 224.
Golden Girlfriends' Meeting
The next meeting of the Golden
Girlfriends will be held on Wednesday, March 20th. Members who attend
these luncheons should have received invitations by now.Reserve your places
by calling Sylvia McLaughlin (848-0699) or Claude Babcock (848-3368). Our
speaker will be Robert Cole, Director of Cal Performances.Mr. Cole will
join us for lunch, and will present his talk at 12:45. Any Club
members in the building at that time are welcome to join the group
to listen to what he has to say about running this distinguished addition
to campus cultural life. Plan to be there. No reservation needed for the
talk.
Centennial Palindrome Contest!
Last month Moosetradamus
had been informed that his rules for the palindrome contest were too restrictive.
In this palindromic year of 2002, win a prize for the best Club palindrome,
period. Not
necessarily one containing the letter that make up the word "ides,"
as formerly announced. We have started receiving more entries, but the
field is still wide open. Where are the entries in Portuguese from
the Spanish and Portuguese department?
President Bruce Bolt will
read the best entries during the party, in his special presidential moment.
As the media cameras flash, hear your deathless efforts intoned in that
classic Aussie accent! Who can resist? Send entries to Jack Coons
at the Club, or e-mail them to your editor at pbrooks@vdn.com. The decisions
of the judges will be equivocal.
A Centennial Cru!
Rosenblum Cellars, the fine Alameda winery operated by the Rosenblum family, with its close connections to the Cal campus, is issuing a limited number of cases of two specially selected wines to honor the Club's Centennial. The 2001 viognier (a fragrant and crisp California version of the northern Rhone's greatest white wine) and the 2000 zinfandel (a stunning wine with intense body and flavor) were selected by the Club's Wine Committee. As soon as the wines arrive, they will be available in the dining room at only $18 a bottle. Cases may be ordered by members: $216 a case. There is no case discount since the price is already heavily discounted. Place your orders now. They will be filled on a first come, first servedbasis.
Art Show of the Month - March
Our artist for February is Dulcynea Wilson, a Berkeley Alumna and member of the Club. She has been working as a p/ein air landscape artist in oils for the past six years, continuing to study her craft at the same time as she produces her views of the California landscape. If you enjoy her paintings, feel free to contact her at 510-527-7904 or by e-mail at dulcy@lmi.net.
Centennial Colloquium Set
Last month we spoke about
the special role that the Club has always filled in promoting the ideal
that a great University should function as a community, a grouping of scholars
in which the whole is more thanthe sum of its depart-mental and divisional
parts.
As a thoughtful beginning
to our March 15th centennial celebration, we have organized a colloquium,
"The Idea of a Community of Scholars," featuring Richard Muller (Physics),
Anne Kilmer (Near Eastern Studies), Walter Alvarez (Geology), and Martin
Trow (Center for Higher Education). The colloquium, at 4:15 p.m. in the
Seaborg Room, is open to all, even if you are not planning to attend the
party (which will start at 6 p.m.). Bring your colleagues and friends.
Wine Committee Dinner
On April 5th the Wine Committee will present its annual dinner.-Committee members work with Felix and our chef to produce a carefully coordinated meal, with matching wines. Members of the committee explain the nature of the wines we are tasting, and the reasons for their choices . The reception will start at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Total cost for the evening is $30 per person, plus tax and tip. This event is elegant and relaxed at the same time - a magical combination and one of the best of our annual events.
Centennial Party!
Reservations for the Centennial
Party have been coming in at a good rate. As of the time of publication
of this Newsletter, there are still tickets available. The $60.06 (palindromic)
price includes dinner, dancing, entertainment, and good fellowship - along
with some surprises.
As part of our ongoing membership
drive, we are opening the party to all faculty members who care to join
us (up to our pre-set capacity, of course). We're hoping that some of your
colleagues may decide to come to the party and then become members. Who
could resist after one of our classic Club parties? (Two millenniums and
a centennial constitute a classic tradition.)
We remind you that all reservations
are on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be honored only by written
request, with a $25 deposit for each reserved place (which can be charged
to your account-no telephone, fax, or e-mail reservations.

Meet The Maybecks
Your editor has just heard
from Phoebe Apperson Hearst (aka Grace Fretter) that she will be bringing
to the Centennial Party her dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Maybeck!
When he designed the Great Hall in 1902, no one expected Maybeck would
be around for the Centennial. But he's coming! Now we can find out
whether those beam ends are supposed to be dragons or bears. Another
reason to come to the March 15th party.
