Message from the Manager
Dear Members! After the graduation parties our staff is gearing up for the summer round of weddings. Meanwhile we continue to serve our members through the summer, with a wine tasting planned for August, the summer Singalong in July, and my Indian dinner. We are sorry to say goodbye to Hope Moon, who has handled our guest reservations very efficiently over the past couple of years. Her replacement, Mayra, will take over Extension 224. I want to congratulate personally those of our student staff who have now graduated. We’ll be hiring and training new personnel over the summer. As always feel free to contact me if I can assist you with any Club related business.
Indian Prix Fixe Dinner
Once again it is time for Felix to remove his tie and put on his chef’s whites. Members in the know recognize that his annual Indian dinner is a delight to the senses. On June 16th join your friends for a trip to the subcontinent, orchestrated by our manager and his loyal kitchen staff. Felix will produce some unusual dishes from western and northern India, including a hunter-style rabbit curry, various tandooris, and so on. Reception at 6 p.m.; dinner/entertainment, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. All-inclusive cost: $40 per person. Reserve at extension 224.Click her to view the menu
Art Show of the Month - June
We have enjoyed before the paintings of the late Helen Angelakos, wife of Diogenes Angelakos, Professor of Electrical Engineering. Born on Cyprus in 1924, she and her husband traveled throughout Europe and Mexico where she made the sketches that eventually became paintings. She was also inspired by the Bay Area’s people, landscapes, flora, and fauna. Her paintings are always a delight to see.
Golden Girlfriends Lunch
We’re looking forward to the last meeting of the year for this lively group, on June 13th. (Note the date change.) At this meeting we shall make plans for the coming year. Bring your ideas for short programs. All surviving spouses of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.
Summer Singalong Dinner
On July 7th join Jack Coons and a group of fellow singers who will gather at the Club to show that members can entertain themselves (and the waiters serving them dinner) with renditions of old favorites. With the support given by the corps of Singing Fools, and a good accompanist, anyone can make his or her way through “By the light of the silvery moon”. Start gargling now. Reception at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and singing till exhaustion sets in. The cost? $35 per person. Reserve at extension 224.
Bargain Dinners, Bar Food Service, Take Out Service, Breakfast Specials - Reminders
The Breakfast Special, a bargain at $2.99, will continue all summer, as will the Bargain Dinners: from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. eat a great meal for only $13.99. Friday will be barbecue night in the Kerr Dining Room. The Short Order Service in the Bar is now bringing in people who have to work late on campus and don’t have rime for a full dinner. Our kitchens can also provide Take Out Lunches that can be ordered by phone or fax. With enough notice, we can arrange delivery on campus.
Eugen Neuhaus Painting of the Faculty Club
This Spring Clars Auction House in Oakland held a large sale of California paintings. Steve Finacom and your editor attended the auction, and bid on this painting, originally labeled “Chinese Temple – Oakland”! The identification was corrected at the auction and the painting went for more than we could afford. Steve discovered that the buyer had withdrawn his/her bid, and when it came back on sale, he got it at $4,250 plus commission (estimate: $6-$8,000), straining his VISA card. Neuhaus was the founder, in 1923, of the Art Practice Department here at Berkeley and painted the portrait of O’Neill in the O’Neill Room. The Board agreed that the Club should have the picture, but did not have the resources to purchase it. Your editor suggested to the Golden Girlfriends, the group of widows of members, that they might undertake to contribute to the cost. They instantly took up the idea. Meanwhile President Karl Pister and Club Director Charles Faulhaber suggested that the Bancroft Library might acquire the painting and put it on permanent loan at the Club. This way donations could be tax-deductible. Jack Van Euw, pictorial curator at the Bancroft, was enthusiastic about the picture – which is in good condition and in its original frame. The Golden Girlfriends have now raised a large part of the cost. We are still short of the total amount, however, and are soliciting some further donations from the membership at large. Please send checks made out to UC Regents to Charles Faulhaber, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-6000, indicating that the donation is for the Neuhaus painting. It will soon be on display at the Club.
Bargain Dinners Continue
Come any weekday evening before 6:30 and enjoy a three-course dinner for the remarkable price of $13.99, including a choice of soup or salad, and dessert. This special is particularly convenient for those who are attending Cal Performances, Berkeley Symphony, games, and so on. It is so popular, in fact, that it is wise to make reservations at 540-5678 ext. 0.
Dinner Menu in the Bar
We are now offering the opportunity for informal, light meals in the Bar on weekday evenings. If you need a quick snack before returning to your department for an early evening meeting, you can now do it in the peace of the Club Bar. The new Bar menu is already in place – check it out. We are also introducing some new wines by the glass, with appetizers. Have a meeting with a friend, or enjoy some TV sports!
Breakfast Special Continues
The Club continues to serve a generous breakfast in the dining room every weekday. For $2.99 you can enjoy juice, coffee or tea, eggs, and toast. After the grim commute, unwind with your newspaper and get ready to fact the day. We don’t discriminate. You can eat the same breakfast even if you walk to campus!
