Message from the Manager
Dear Members! I hope you are enjoying the summer weather. Here at the Club we are busy with weddings and member events. Do look at our calendar and plan to attend some of the events we’ve planned for you. The early-bird dinners continue to attract concert and play goers, and our Friday night barbecues have been a success. Come and try them. The House committee is working with management on further renovations. I’ll keep you informed as they progress. I want to congratulate those of our student employees who graduated this May and wish them much success. We are in the process of hiring new staff members. We now have a pocket-sized list of clubs offering reciprocal privileges to Faculty Club members. Pick up a copy at the front desk if you are planning further travels this year; we have associates all over the world. As always, you should feel free to contact me or ask for help in any club related matter.
Summer Sing-Along Dinner
On July 7th join Jack Coons and a group of fellow singers who will gather at the Club to show that members can entertain themselves with renditions of old favorites. With some vocal support and a good accompanist, anyone can make his or her way through “By the light of the silvery moon”. Enjoy a good dinner with convivial company and relax with the joy of singing. Reception at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., followed by singing at the Bar. The cost? $35 per person. Reserve at extension 224.
Winemaker’s Dinner
Our next winemaker’s dinner, on August 24th, will feature the founder and winemaker of Corison Winery, Cathy Corison. A self-described “ma and pa” winery between Rutherford and St. Helena, Corison produces highly esteemed cabernet sauvignons that have attracted international attention. Cathy’s concept is to make a complex wine by taking advantage of the natural range of flavors possible in the cabernet sauvignon grapes grown on different sites in the immediate vicinity of the winery. (See the website at www.corison.com) Felix and our chef will once again plan a special meal to show off the qualities of these unusual wines. Reception at 6 p.m.; dinner at 7 p.m. $65 all-inclusive. Reserve now at extension 224.
Golden Girlfriends Lunch
The first meeting of the coming academic year for this group will be on August 17th. All surviving spouses of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.
Art Show of the Month - July
Once again we are showing the work of former UC Berkeley instructor Rex Ashlock (1918-1999), this time oil paintings he produced during the 1950s while living in the East Bay. The canvases include images of Bay Area bridges and boats, along with portraits and still lifes. The works to be shown during this month are part of a collection kept in a storage unit in Berkeley since the artist’s death. They include interesting historical views from the Bay area from the late 1940s and 50s. Ashlock exhibited only rarely during his lifetime. This exhibit has been arranged by Georgia Kuchen who has contributed the notes to the pictures. Peter Falk has characterized Ashlock as a “previously unacknowledged artist highly deserving of critical recognition”. For a full account of his life and a view of a large number of his works, see the section dedicated to him at www.falkart.com.

Barbecues, Breakfast, Bargain Dinners, Bar Food Service - Reminders
The newly established Friday evening bargain Barbecues are proving to be popular. Come by and try this special summer treat soon. The Breakfast Special, a bargain at $2.99, will continue all summer, as will the Bargain Dinners from 5 to 6:30 eat a great meal for only $13.99. The Short Order Service in the Bar is now bringing in people who have to work late on campus and don’t have time for a full dinner – or watch the final games of the World Cup. Our kitchens can also provide Take Out Lunches that can be ordered by phone or fax. With enough notice, we can arrange for delivery on campus.
Bargain Dinners Continue
Come any weekday evening before 6:30 and enjoy a three-course dinner for the remarkable price of $13.99, including a choice of soup or salad, and dessert. This special is particularly convenient for those who are attending Cal Performances, Berkeley Symphony, games, and so on. It is so popular, in fact, that it is wise to make reservations at 540-5678 ext. 0.
Breakfast Special Continues
The Club continues to serve a generous breakfast in the dining room every weekday. For $2.99 you can enjoy juice, coffee or tea, eggs, and toast. After the grim commute, unwind with your newspaper and get ready to fact the day. We don’t discriminate. You can eat the same breakfast even if you walk to campus!
