Message from the Manager

I want to start by wishing you all a very happy New Year. I hope you all had a safe and wonderful holiday season.  We are starting the new year with new member programs.  Much needed work was done during our closing both on the kitchen and in other parts of the Club.  Check the new lighting in the O'Neill room, and the improved lighting in the Great Hall, where the final touch, new chandeliers, will soon be installed.  I look forward to seeing you all here at the Club during the New Year.
— Felix Solomon, Manager

Club Food Services Resume

On January 2nd the Club will resume food services with a limited menu, and full services will start again on January 14th, when kitchen renovations are completed.

"Napa Valley - Wine and the Land"

Join wine lovers who want to explore the connection between the taste of wine and the nature of the land on which the grapes were grown. On Friday, January 25th, from 5 to 7 p.m., Dr. David Howell, co-author of a forth-coming U.C. Press book on Napa Valley wines, will lead a tasting of outstanding wines. There will be two tasting "flights." First, we'll compare a number of pinot noirs made from one year's grapes grown in different vineyards by the same winemaker and by the same process. Then we'll taste as many as seven outstanding (and expensive!) cabemet sauvignons made of grapes from different vineyards by various winemakers.
Participation will be limited to 40 people. Hors d'oeuvres will be served to accompany the tasting. The all-inclusive price is $40. Reserve your place now by calling Mark at 540-5678, ext. 224.

Golden Girlfriends' Meeting

The next meeting of the Golden Girlfriends will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd. Members who attend these luncheons will receive notification in the mail in early January.

Our artist for January is David Molesky, a Cal graduate and member of the Alumni Association. Co-founder of the Yellow Bam Gallery and Studio in Glen Echo National Park, Molesky has been in many group and one-man exhibitions in the Bay Area and the Mid-Atlantic regions, including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. The Centennial Palindrome Contest!

Moosetradamus reminds you to get your entries in to The Grand, Once-in-a-lifetime, Centennial Palindrome Contest. In this uniquely palindromic year of 2002, Win a prize for the best palindrome that includes the letters in the word  "Ides." Example (bad): I,  madam, I saw stars edit noont ide's rats. Was I mad? Am I?"
Contestants will be rewarded for efforts that have the simplicity and thought-provoking qualities of the classic "Do geese see God?" In case of ties, ambivalent prizes will be awarded. The decisions of the judges will be equivocal. Winners will hear their entries read by Moosetradamus during the Centennial Party, so get to work. Send entries to Jack Coons, c/o the Club. Your editor will also receive entries by e-mail at pbrooks@vdn.com

After that? Dance with Kelly Park, sing with Joanne Neaville, reminisce with Tom Bopp, and on, and on, and on. You will be receiving your invitation soon, but save the date now!
