Message from the Manager
Here it is, the end of the year and Christmas parties ready to get under way. This has been a good year, one that has gone by quickly, and I want to thank you for supporting the club and its many events. Our staffs have also worked hard and with dedication. They do a great job and deserve the thanks of all of us. During the Christmas break we’ll be installing our new dishwasher: this means the Club will have to be closed, except for hotel guests, from December 18th to January 3rd. We now have new furniture in place on the Seaborg patio, and continue to improve the club little by little. I hope you all have a great holiday season. I look forward to serving you in the coming year. As always feel free to contact me if I can assist you with any club related business. Thank you.
Letter from the President
No doubt members would like to know that the Club Board has agreed on a solution to the twelve-month hiatus blocking the modernization of the bedrooms in the northern wing. Architect drawings and a bank loan were approved almost a year ago, to provide all these rooms with en suite bathrooms. Approval by the State architect was not forthcoming until a set of minimal ADA-compatible facilities were provided in the historic Club building. The essential element was an elevator between the Great Hall/ Heyns room and bedrooms on the south wing across the present door of the Hart room. Your Board has approved a special bank loan of up to $250,000 to cover the cost of this work. We are all pleased there is an acceptable resolution. The successful amortization of the loan debt depends on us all participating in Club activities and recruiting more faculty as members. With best wishes for the holiday season and a good new year.
Christmas Parties
The boar’s head has been shampooed, Moose has learned the words to all the songs in the entertainment, the staff has put together the plans for decorations and dining, and the squires (and one squires) have brushed up tuxedos and evening wear. Now let the happy throng to assemble. Let the trumpets sound, let the Monks process, let the voices of members join in old melodies to waken the bears at the beam ends in the Great Hall, and let’s once again prove that the best start to the holiday season is right here in the Club.
Valentine’s Dinner Dance
The 2005 Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance will be held on February 11 th. Mark your calendars now and line up that special person. Great food and wonderful music to dance the evening away. Cost will be $60 a person. Reserve with Hope at ext. 224.
Art Show of the Month – December
Monk Dick White is once again showing photos of Monks and Christmas party memories. In the picture on the previous page, two faux Monks carry the traditional boar’s head for its formal portrait. Dick is in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and is a member the Club’s Board of Directors. He joined the Monks in 1963, after learning that no audition was required for membership. His photos are intended as a recollection of the fun that the Monks have in rehearsals and at the party.
Crab Dinner
What would a Bay Area winter be like without at least one gluttonous indulgence in crabs, crabs, and more crabs? Last year’s Crab Festival was a great success. Make your reservations now by calling Hope at extension 224.
Return of Tom Bopp
Club members do not seem to be able to get enough of the work of Tom Bopp, popular pianist and song stylist. His repertoire ranges from the Gay 90s to – well, we’ve never really determined that! You can hear him in his appearances here at the Club, and at the Wawona Hotel in Yosemite, where you would pay a hefty sum to hear him perform. Another great Club bargain! On Janurary 28 th plan to attend this evening of fine food and fun-filled music. Reception at 6; dinner at 7. Cost:$45 all inclusive. Reserve at extension 224.
Wine Committee Dinner
On February 25 th join the Wine Committee for a fine meal including Rod Park’s presentation of some of his own Rockpile Winery wines. This dinner will also include wines from J.C. Cellars and Paradise Ridge Winery. Cost: $60 per person for reception, and four course dinner with matching wines. More details in January Newsletter.
