Message from the Manager

          Dear Members!
The summer is rushing past, and classes will begin again at the end of the month. The Club has been busy during these otherwise quieter weeks on campus, with many weddings and other special events. But our main concern is, of course, the planning of events for our members and the improvement of our services. By the middle of the month you will see new menus in the dining room and bar. See the note below for other food information.

We have developed a pocket-sized list of clubs that offer reciprocal privileges to our members. It is enclosed with this newsletter. Make it part of your regular travel kit so that you can take advantage of these options for meals and rooms around the world.

We are hiring new staff and continuing their training to be ready for fallsemester. All of us are looking forward to welcoming back those of our members who have been away for the summer. Be sure to stop by and say hello to me on your return.
As always, you should feel free to contact me or ask for help in any club related matter.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Winemaker’s Dinner

Our next winemaker’s dinner, on August 24th, will feature the founder and winemaker of Corison Winery, Cathy Corison. A self-described "ma and pa" winery between Rutherford and St. Helena, Corison produces highly esteemed cabernet sauvignons that have attracted international attention. Cathy’s concept is to make a complex wine by taking advantage of the natural range of flavors possible in cabernet sauvignon grapes grown on different sites in the immediate vicinity of the winery. (See the website at www.corison.com.) Felix and our chef will once again plan a special meal to show off the qualities of these unusual wines. Reception at 6 p.m.; dinner at 7. $65 all inclusive. Reserve now at extension 224.

Golden Girlfriends

Golden GirlfriendsThe first meeting of the coming academic year for this group will be on August 17th. Our program will be an illustrated presentation, "A guest worker’s view of Kyoto." All widows of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.

Wine Tasting on the Glade

Yes, the Fall Wine Tasting on the Glad is coming round again. On September 15th join the happy hordes and enjoy sipping a wide range of wines from quality wineries. Each time we hold one of these events members find new favorites and have the opportunity to order them at extra special prices. Your editor is carefully saving for just the right people the few bottles she has left of a classic Riesling from Germany that she picked up at the last tasting and is still wondering at. After the tasting (beginning at 5:30 p.m.) enjoy a great dinner and live music. All for $42 per person all-inclusive. Reserve now at extension 224.

Art Show of the Month – August

This month’s artist is photographer Harvey Helfand, a graduate of UC’s College of Environmental Design and long time campus planner. He is a columnist for the Alumni Association’s California Magazine and author of The Campus Guide: University of California Berkeley (Princeton Architectural Press, 2002). His photographs of the campus have appeared in many publications. In addition to campus material, Harvey will show photographs from other parts of his life, including the time he spent working in the Palau Islands of Micronesia. He can be reached by e-mail at helfandphotography@earthlink.net.

Halloween Costume Ball

On October 27th a new event is entering the Club’s calendar – our first Halloween Masked Ball. In the hopes that this will become an annual event, we are planning a great party, with a reception beginning at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and dancing to follow. Who knows what other surprises will be in store? Start planning your costume now. The cost? $35 per person. Reserve at extension 224.

By mid-August we will have revised lunchtime menus in place in the dining room, with exciting new choices. We will also be offering a new wine-by-the-glass selection, with appetizers, in the bar. Our kitchens can also provide Take Out Lunches that can be ordered by phone or fax. With enough notice, we can arrange delivery on campus.
