Message from the Manager
Dear Members!
I would like to welcome everyone back to the campus and to the Club. It is great to see so much activity around us again.
We continue programs throughout the summer, and most recently had a great turnout for an enjoyable evening with Fritz Maytag of Anchor Steam Brewing Company. Now we look forward to a busy fall, with several new events scheduled. Watch the Newsletter and mark your calendars early.
If you have an idea for a program or event at the Club, be sure to pass your ideas on to me and the Events Committee.
During the summer we worked on several upgrades, including new lights in the Bar. More will be coming.
I look forward to seeing you and serving you at the Club, with the help of our great staff. Welcome home!
September Wine Tasting on the Glade
The seasons roll round. Once more it’s time to enjoy the fall wine tasting on the Glade, on September 14th., Dozens of wineries set up tables where you can find new favorites from familiar winemakers, or discover unsuspected pleasures from wineries you may never have heard of. All with the opportunity to place orders at special Club prices. After the tasting (beginning at 5:30 p.m.) enjoy a great dinner and live music. All for $42 per person, all-inclusive. A great way to repay social obligations – the more guests, the merrier! Reserve now at extension 224.
Art Show of the Month - September
This month’s show is by Jean Hearst. After working some years on silk screens, she began working in other mediums, primarily watercolor and acrylic. Her subject matter is varied but she often finds a fantasy or surreal picture emerging as she works. Jean enjoys experiencing the germ of an idea unfolding. Her work on silk screens generally leads her to using layering techniques in other mediums.
Buffets, Breakfast, Bargain Dinners, Bar Food Service
The popular Friday evening bargain Friday Fish Night ($13.99!) continues during the summer. Come by and try it soon. The Breakfast Special, a bargain at $2.99, will continue all summer, as will the Bargain Dinners: from 5 to 6:30 eat a great meal for only $13.99. See the Club notice board for the menu of the month. The Short Order Service in the Bar is now bringing in people who have to work late on campus and don’t have time for a full dinner. The summer specials in the Bar will be $2 tacos on Tuesdays and half-price appetizers on Thursday. Our kitchen can also provide Take Out Lunches that can be ordered by phone or fax. With enough notice, we can arrange delivery on campus.
Golden Girlfriends Lunch
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 17th. All surviving spouses of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Reserve by calling 540-5678, ext. 224. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.
Faculty Club Forum
Under the guidance of our Events Chairman, Jerry Lubenow, the Club will present
a new series of regular programs addressing a range of interests and issues in the arts and sciences. The programs will
feature a wine and cheese reception at 5:30 and the program at 6:00 p.m. All for $15. Reserve now (at extension 224) - and why not continue your discussions over a dinner in the Kerr Dining Room?
Here is the fall schedule for your planning:
Looking ahead to the Presidential Race. On September 20th Jerry Lubenow (Institute of Governmental Studies) will
lead a panel of experts including John Ellwood (Goldman School of Public Policy), Helen Halpin (Director of the Center for
Health and Public Policy Studies), and David Karol (Political Science).
The Global State of Anglicanism. Conflicts within the Anglican Communion have been tense in current years over
difficult issues such as homosexuality and church leadership. The church has grown incredibly in the Global South at a
time when it is stagnating in the North. On October 3rd Professor Don Morgan (Church Divinity School of the Pacific, GTU)
will discuss how fundamental north-south cultural differences will affect global Anglicanism and the Episcopal Church in the
U.S. Moderato: Sarah Heitler Bamberger, Program Director, The Religion, Politics and Globalization Project.
Celebrating Twyla Tharp. A talk by Boston Phoenix, dance writer and author of Howling Near Heaven: Twyla Tharp
and the Reinvention of Modern Dance. Co-sponsored on November 9th with Cal Performances where the American Ballet Theater
will perform Tharp’s “Baker’s Dozen” and “Sinatra Suite” that evening at Zellerbach Hall.
Student Performers’ Dinner Concerts
Another new program! This series will showcase the Music School’s best young performers in a series of monthly dinner programs on October 11th, November 8th, December 13th, and January 10th. Watch for details of specific programs and performers on the Club notice board and in upcoming Newsletters, but plan to reserve for the October dinner now. Reception at 6; dinner and concert between 7 and 9p.m. Cost: $40 per person for the dinner and the concert. Try it! You’ll like it!
Parking for Club Events
We are sorry to have to remind you that changes in the University’s parking policies mean that we can no longer offer free parking for Club events. Parking is still available in the structure across Bancroft from the Art Museum, but at a cost of $10. You can arrange for parking at the time you make your reservation. Check with the reservations clerk, Mayra, at ext. 224.
Navarro Winemaker’s Dinner
On November 16th Jim Klein of Navarro Vineyards will join us for another of the Club’s magnificent winemaker’s dinners, matching fine wines with an elegant meal. These dinners sell out fast, so be sure to get your reservations in early. More details in the October Newsletter. The cost will be $65 per person, all-inclusive.
Membership Dues
At its August meeting the Board of Directors of the Faculty Club reviewed and approved the budget for the new fiscal year. Noting that there had been no dues increase for member since 2004, and recognizing the increased cost of food, beverages, and campus-imposed fees, the directors authorized a $1 (one dollar) dues increase for all membership categories, effective October 1st, 2007.
Football at the Club
Every Saturday that Cal plays at home during the football season the Club is open for pre-game lunches and drinks, as well as post-game snacks and cocktails. Beat the crowd, arrive early, get your team spirit flowing, and enjoy a short walk to the stadium. Then celebrate afterwards. GO BEARS!
