Message from the Manager

Welcome back! It’s great to see you all at the Club. I hope you had a successful summer. We have been busy planning events and developing new menus. We hope you enjoy them–mark your calendars now. Christmas will soon be with us. The invitations will be mailed in mid-October. As usual, reservations will be accepted only in writing (no e-mails or phone calls) and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. When you call extension 224 to reserve for events you will hear a new voice. Lynn Sinclaire is now our administrative assistant. As always, I am available at the Club to take any of your questions or suggestions. Thank you.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Wine tasting on the Glade

Here it comes again! One of the most popular events on the Club calendar. Join your friends on September 19th for our fall wine tasting on the glade. Tables are set out under the trees with a wide range of wines available here at the Club and by special order. After tasting, go inside to enjoy a special dinner, with dancing until 9 p.m. Many members find this is a perfect way to introduce new colleagues to the Club, or to repay social obligations without a lot of hard work. The tasting begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and live music at 7 p.m. The cost is $32 per person, plus tax and tip.

An Evening on the Recall...

On September 16th members are invited to meet with Mark Di Camillo, Director of the Field Poll, for dinner and a discussion of the recall and other matters on the upcoming ballot, including the initiative on racial identity. Jerry Lubenow from IGS will host this special event. Pre-dinner drinks will begin at 6 p.m., and the dinner at 7 p.m. In addition to a presentation after dinner, Mr. Di Camillo will be open to member questions. This event is limited to 40 people, so get your reservations in early (at extension 224). Cost: $30, all-inclusive.

Art Show of the Month – September

William Jolly, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, continues to show in the Club Gallery, this time with photographs from his early years as a student photographer. Nostalgic prints show the effect of World War II on students. For more information, e-mail to wljolly@socrates.berkeley.edu.

Wine Evening with Edouard Moueix

Wine lovers! Save the evening of October 10th for a special winemaker’s dinner with Edouard Moueix presenting wines from Dominus Estate. This is an opportunity to hear a distinguished wine expert, who is returning to France shortly and will not be available for future presentations in the area. Reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. $60 per person.

Gallery of Berkeley School Paintings

We have been reporting on the anticipated celebration of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Art Practice Department here at Berkeley. When it was founded in 1923, only a couple of other universities in the nation had such a department. With the energetic help of Karl Kasten, we have assembled a remarkable set of paintings from various donors to form a representative collection of works from the Berkeley School (from about 1925 to 1950), to be housed in the O’Neill Room. The Club and the Art Department are cooperating on plans for a gala opening and dinner on the evening of October 23rd. Watch for details in the September Newsletter, but circle the date now. Seating will be limited.

Bargain Dinners Continue

Members are encouraged to join those who continue to discover and enjoy the biggest dining bargain in Berkeley. Come to the Kerr Dining Room any weekday evening before 6:30 and enjoy a three-course dinner for the remarkable price of $11.95. Always at least two choices of entrée, a choice of soup or salad, and a sinful dessert. The September menu is enclosed with this Newsletter. Reserve to be sure of a table.

Bits, Bytes, and Dollars...

Some of our Club employees are well known to members who see them every day in the public spaces. But other vital people work in the quiet of our basement offices. This month we want to introduce our Controller, Syed Haque, a talented multitasker who takes care of more than the dollars and cents. Born in Pakistan, Syed came to Florida when he was 15. He started in the hotel business as a desk clerk, but there was no keeping him down. He trained as an accountant, and became controller of Embassy Suites in Florida. Moving to the Hilton, where he worked for Merv Griffin, he suddenly felt the call of the wild. So he came to California. Once here he took a degree in Computer Information Systems and after working in De Anza College he came to the Club in 2000. He has instituted many checks and balances into our accounting procedures. With the help of his good staff, he was able to present data and systems that enabled the Club to pass its first formal audit with flying colors. He wants to see more high tech innovations in our systems, with greater efficiency of operations. When he’s not watching football, or playing tennis and golf, he loves to program. So it was natural for him to redesign and start maintaining the Club’s website. Why does he want to stay with the Club? It’s the usual answer: the great members and working colleagues and a warm atmosphere of constant learning.

Hotel Rooms

Many of our members are not aware that upstairs in the Club there are over twenty hotel rooms available for rental at highly competitive prices. Some were extensively remodeled a few years ago, and the remainder are now scheduled to be upgraded within the current academic year. This has been a slow process as we meet requirements that will let us add bathrooms to each of these rooms. All will be redecorated in line with the Club’s return to its Craftsman tradition. Whether you have personal guests, or your department or division is housing a visitor, call the Club (extension 3) or check our website for available rooms and prices.

Oktoberfest!

Once again the Club will celebrate autumn with great food and wine and dancing at our annual Oktoberfest. $35 per person, all-inclusive. More details next month, but mark October 17th as the date to have your dirndls and lederhosen ready!

Football Saturdays

Park early and leave late! Avoid the crowds by coming into the Club for lunch on game days. Then join your friends for a friendly glass in the bar when it’s over and Cal has won (or even if, sob, we lose). Salad bar, sandwiches and burgers available, with seating in the Great Hall and bar, according to this schedule:

       Sep. 6,27, Oct. 4: 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.

       Oct. 25, Nov. 10: 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.

If the game is to be on TV, call for Club hours.

Breakfast Special

More and more people are discovering the convenience of the Club’s morning breakfast special. From 7 to 10 a.m. you can come by the Kerr Room and for $2.99 enjoy juice, eggs, coffee, and toast. Pick up a newspaper on the way to campus and relax after that commute or uphill bike ride.

Golden Girlfriends

At the end of this month the members of this group will be receiving a mailing about the October 9th meeting. Our guest will be Professor Paula Timiras. Her research specialty is aging and we’ll have a chance to ask her questions. The group is open to all widows of members. For more information, call Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.
