Message from the Manager
Dear Members!
It’s hard to believe that another year is drawing to a close. It’s been a good and busy year at the Club, and I would
like to take this opportunity to wish you all a great Thanksgiving with your family and friends.
We continue to plan and host many member events, and your participation helps them to be successful. The Oktoberfest
was great fun, and everyone present enjoyed it. Still to come this year is a further contribution to our lecture series,
and concerts by Music Department students.
I am delighted to be able to congratulate our President, Karl Pister, on receiving the Clark Kerr award for distinguished
leadership to higher education. We all appreciate his distinguished leadership here at the Club.
If you have an idea for a program or event at the Club be sure to pass your ideas on to me.
Remember that I enjoy seeing you and serving you at the Club. Feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns.
Navarro Winemaker’s Dinner
On November 16th Jim Klein of Navarro Vineyards will join us for another of the Club’s magnificent winemaker’s dinners, matching fine wines with an elegant meal. These dinners sell out fast, so be sure to get your reservations in early. The cost will be $65 per person, all inclusive.
Art Show of the Month - November
This month we enjoy the work of Club member Dr. M. Thompson Conkle. Since retiring from research in forest genetics, Tom and his wife, Frieda, frequently travel with CAL Alumni Bear Treks. Oil paintings from their excursions to France and Italy are featured in this exhibition.
Buffets, Breakfast, Bargain Dinners, Bar Food Service
The popular new Friday evening bargain Fish Dinner ($13.99!) continues during the fall. Come by and try it soon. The Breakfast Special, a bargain at $2.99, will continue, as will the regular Bargain Dinners: from 5 to 6:30. Enjoy a great meal for only $13.99. See the Club notice board for the menu of the month. The Short Order Service in the Bar is now bringing in people who have to work late on campus and don’t have time for a full dinner. Specials in the Bar include $2 tacos on Tuesdays. And we always have the Happy Hour on weekday afternoons!
Golden Girlfriends Lunch
The next meeting will be on November 29th. As we talk about holiday traditions in our families, and how we face the time of the year now, we’ll also be celebrating the 100th birthday of our oldest member, Mila Mangold. All surviving spouses of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Reserve by calling 540-5678, ext. 224. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Do not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951
Club Forum – Twyla Tharp
Under the guidance of our Events Chairman, Jerry Lubenow, the Club has started a new series of programs addressing a range of interests and issues in the arts and sciences. The programs will feature a wine and cheese reception at 5:30 and the program at 6:00 p.m. All for $15. Reserve now (at extension 224)- and why not continue your discussions over a dinner in the Kerr Dining Room? Celebrating Twyla Tharp. A talk by Boston Phoenix, dance writer and author of Howling Near Heaven: Twyla Tharp and the Reinvention of Modern Dance. Co-sponsored on November 9th with Cal Performances where the American Ballet Theater will perform Tharp’s “Baker’s Dozen” and “Sinatra Suite” that evening at Zellerbach Hall.
Parking for Club Events
We are sorry to have to remind you that changes in the University’s parking policies mean that we can no longer offer free parking for Club events. Parking is still available in the structure across Bancroft from the Art Museum, but at a cost of $10. You can arrange for parking at the time you make your reservation. Check with the reservations clerk, Mayra, at ext. 224.
Christmas Parties
Invitations have now been sent to members for the parties on December 5th, 6th, and 7th. Please remember that seating is on a first come, first served basis, and no phone or e-mail reservations can be accepted. Get your requests in early for the best choice of dates. The boar’s head is being shampooed, Moose is learning the words to all the songs in the entertainment, the staff is putting together the plans for decorations and dining, and the squires have brushed up their evening wear. Let the happy throng to assemble. Let the trumpets sound, let the Monks process, let the voices of members join in old melodies to waken the bears at the beam ends in the Great Hall, and prove once again that the best start to the holiday season is right here in the Club.
Student Performers’ Dinner Concerts
Another new program! This series will showcase the Music School’s best young performers in a series of monthly dinner programs on November 8th, December 13th, and January 10th. Watch for details of specific programs and performers on the Club notice board and in upcoming Newsletters, but plan to reserve for the November dinner now. Reception at 6p.m.; dinner and concert between 7 and 9p.m. Cost: $40 per person for the dinner and the concert. Try it! You’ll like it!
Wine Committee Highlights
In addition to organizing wine maker dinners each year, the Wine Committee brings wines to your attention that you may want to try at home or with friends. Here’s a recent good value wine we tasted: Marquis Philips from South Australia, produces some very good quality, moderately priced wines. There is a cabernet sauvignon, a shiraz (syrah) and, perhaps best of all, “Sarah’s Blend” which is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They are all available for $12.99. Robert Parker gives the 2005 Sarah’s Blend 91 points and says “Opulent, voluptuous, and full-bodied, with low acidity and sweet tannin, this is a blockbuster red that sells for a song. If you like fruit, flavor and character, this is a big-time winner to drink over the next 3-4 years”. Available from K&L Wines and The Wine Club in San Francisco, and elsewhere.
Football at the Club
Every Saturday that Cal plays at home during the football season the Club is open for pre-game lunches and drinks, as well as post-game snacks and cocktails. Beat the crowd, arrive early, get your team spirit flowing, and enjoy a short walk to the stadium. Then celebrate afterwards. GO BEARS!
