Message from the Manager

          Dear Members!
An overflow crowd enjoyed an elegant meal and highly informative lecture at our Calera Winemaker’s dinner. We learned about the importance of limestone soil in making certain kinds of wine and had the opportunity to taste the wines in question . This kind of experience is what makes our winemakers’ dinners so popular. Come to the next one and find out what the enthusiasm is all about. Ahead of us in May are two more of our big events: the Mothers’ Day brunch and the spring wine-tasting on the glade. There are still spaces available for the brunch in certain time slots, but get your reservation sin as soon as possible. Our staff is now also working hard to get ready for graduation parties as well as regular Club events. Further upgrades are being planned for the building. I will keep you informed as they happen. I appreciate your feedback, whether on Club events or other matters concerning our operations so please feel free to contact me at any time.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Dedication of the Heyman Room

On April 19th the Board of Directors, Manager Felix Solomon, and friends of Mike Heyman gathered to dedicate the Heyman Room, in the East Wing of the Club building, the newly honored Mike poses with President Karl Pister in the doorway of his room. Chancellor from 1980 to 1990, Mike joined the UC faculty in 1959. He has played many roles here at the Club, from sturdy supporter as a campus administrator to regular participant in the Christmas party shows. Beyond his most important part of is UC service, he has also served as Herman F. Selvin Professor of Law, along with holding a joint appointment in the Department of Cxity and Regional Planning. The Club lent him to the Smithsonian Institution from 1994 to 1999 so that he could serve as Secretary, overseeing the operations of sixteen museums and galleries, the National Zoo, and may research facilities. He is currently working with Presidio Trust in San Francisco, and serving on other governing and advisory boards. Well worth having a room named after him! Floreat!

Golden Girlfriends Lunch

After a successful April meeting with Susan Snyder from the Bancroft Library, this group will meet for the last lunch of the academic year on June 12th. All widows of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group, which meets once every two onths. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. For more informations, call Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951

Annual Meeting and Elections

The Club’s annual general meeting was held on April 4th. Election results were reported: Ed Revelli was re-elected to another term on the Board of Directors, and Jerry Lubenow replaced Dick White. Karl Pister will continue as President, with Ed Revelli as Vice-President, Charles Faulhaber as Treasurer, and Ken Ribet as Secretary. President Pister’s annual report was positive. Manager Felix Solomon and his team received warm praise for their leadership and accomplishments. Revenues are up from last year, but the Club faces many costs in the area of building maintenance. Although, by the terms of the accord signed when Al Bowker was Chancellor, the campus administration is technically responsible for maintaining the building structure and the exterior of the building, the campus has so many problems of deferred maintenance that the Club is going to have to undertake the financing of some of these needed repairs itself. The forming of standing committees is still in progress. Watch for lists next month.

Mother’s Day Brunch

On May 13th the Club once again offers its celebration of maternity- a day of wine and roses. Corsages and champagne. A delicious buffet. Wandering musicians. There are still placees left in certain time slots. Price: $40 per person. Children 5 to 10, $20. Reserve at extension 224.

Birthdays and other Food Services

During May we are offering a Birthday Special. With the coupon in this mailing you can celebrate your birthday with family and friends – and your entrée is free! We’re continuing our early-bird Bargain Dinners from 5 to 6:30pm on Mondays through Thursdays, with special fish meals at the same price on Fridays – a great pre-show meal for only $13.99. Reservations at 540-5678, extension 0. We also offer informal, light meals in the Bar on weekday evening. Breakfast in the Kerr Dining Room continues to be the best breakfast bargain in Berkeley. We can also provide Take Out Lunches that may be ordered by phone or fax. With notice, we can arrange delivery on campus. See the Club notice board for the menu for Early Bird dinners.

Wine Tasting on the Glade

Yes, it is springtime again, and the vintners of northern California will once again be vying to catch your attention with their latest releases and old favorites. Gather a group of friends, and enjoy the tasting on May 18th. As you arrive, dozens of wineries will have their products available for tasting on tables set up around Faculty Glade. To one side, pick up tasty snacks to punctuate your sipping. Consult your wine lists and make notes of those wines you would like to purchase at special Club prices. After tasting from 5:30 to 7:00pm, enjoy a lavish buffet dinner and dancing from 7 to 9. If you’ve never experienced a wine tasting on the glade, you owe it to yourself to try one. You will get hooked. Cost: $40 per person, all-inclusive.

Artist of the Month - May

Once again, we will be appreciating the fine photography taken by Lotfi Zadeh, Professor of Electrical Engineering. His extraordinary portraits have given us much pleasure in the past. He develops and prints his pictures in his home darkroom.

Indian Dinner Coming Up!

It’s once again time for Felix to put on his chef’s whites. On June 15th enjoy a culinary passage to India, set up by our manager and his kitchen staff. Reception at 6 p.m.; dinner and entertainment, 7 p.m. All inclusive cost: $40 per person.

Parking for Club Events

New University parking policies mean that we can no longer offer free parking for Club events. Parking is still available in the structure across Bancroft from the Art Museum, but at a cost of $10. You can arrange for parking at the time you make your reservations, or, for major events like the Mothers’ Day brunch, buy a permit from the attendant at the structure. Check with reservations clerk, Mayra at ext. 224
