Message from the Manager

          Dear Members!
Our 2007 events have been a great success, with good turnouts for the Valentine’s Day celebration and the Thackrey wine tasting. The Events Committee is planning more new events for members, especially a series of lecture-discussions on a variety of topics, beginning in April. We have now installed new light fixtures at the east entrance to the Club, in the east hallway, and in the adjoining meeting rooms. There is also a spotlight outside to illuminate the back steps. The new dining room offering using organic vegetables and meat from the Niman Ranch are now in place and have drawn favorable comments. I personally appreciate your feedback, so please feel free to contact me at any time.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Return of Tom Bopp

On March 23rd we welcome back a Club favorite. Club members do not seem to be able to get enough of the work of Tom Bopp, popular pianist and song stylist. His repertoire ranges from the Gay 90s to – well, we’ve never really determined that! You can hear him in his appearances here at the Club, and at the Wawona Hotel in Yosemite, where you would pay a hefty sum to hear him perform. A great Club bargain at $45 per person. Enjoy this evening of fine food and fun-filled music. Reception at 6; dinner at 7.

Art Show of the Month – March

This month’s show is by Ralph Freeman of our School of Optometry and consists of photographs from India, taken in November 2006. Most of the pictures are from the northwestern state of Rajasthan. See the Taj Mahal from an unusual angle! The pictures were taken with a digital camera, with a little Photoshop help in the finished products. For more information, contact the photographer by e-mail at freeman@neurovision.berkeley.edu

Food Services

We’re continuing our early-bird Bargain Dinners from 5 to 6:30 on Monday through Thursday, with special fish meals at the same price on Fridays – a great pre-show meal for only $13.99. Reservations at 540-5678 extension 0. Take advantage of the new heart healthy offerings at both lunch and dinner in the Kerr dining room, as well as changing wine-by-the-glass selections in the bar. We also offer informal, light meals in the Bar on weekday evenings. Breakfast in the Kerr Dining Room continues to be the best breakfast bargain in Berkeley. Our kitchens can also provide Take Out Lunches that may be ordered by phone or fax. With notice, we can arrange delivery on campus. Watch the Club notice board for the special early bird dinners.

Golden Girlfriends Lunch

This group continues to meet bimonthly throughout the academic year. At the April 17th (note change of date!) meeting, we have a special program. Susan Snyder from Bancroft Library will talk about her latest picture book entitled Past Tents, all about the history of recreational camping in California. All widows of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.

Neuhaus Picture of the Club

Many of you will remember that last year Steve Finacom purchased at auction a 1920 painting of the Club by Eugen Neuhaus, founder of the university’s Art Practice Department. Members contributed to the cost of the painting, especially the Golden Girlfriends (see previous item). Technically (for tax deduction purposes) the picture was acquired by the Bancroft Library, to be placed in the Club on permanent loan. The Board of Directors has now paid off the balance of the cost and we hope to hang the picture, outside the Great Hall, very soon. Watch for it!

Annual Meeting and Elections

During this month you will receive ballots for electing people to the Board of Directors of the Club. Results will be announced at the annual meeting, to be held at noon on April 4th. At this time the Board and Management will report on the running of the Club and share financial information on the past year. Come and learn more about the overall operation of the Club you own.

Mothers’ Day Brunch

On May 13th the Club once again offers its celebration of maternity. There’s no place in town that offers the relaxed charm of this event. Reservation forms are coming to you and we advise that you get your reservation sin early – some popular hours fill up fast! Brunch includes champagne, flowers, a wandering musician, and a delicious buffet spread. Price: $40 per person. Reserve at extension 224.

Parking for Club Events

We are sorry to have to remind you that changes in the University’s parking policies mean that we can no longer offer free parking for Club events. Parking is still available in the structure across Bancroft from the Art Museum, but at a cost of $10. You can arrange for parking at the time you make your reservation, or, for major events like the Mothers’ Day lunch, buy a permit from the attendant at the structure. Check with the reservations clerk, Mayra, at ext. 224.

Winemaker’s Dinner

The next winemaker’s dinner will be on April 20th and the featured winery will be Calera Wince Company, noted for its pinot noir among other varietals that flourish in the limestone rich soils of the Gavilan Mountains inland from Monterey. As usual, our chef will prepare a special meal to compliment the wines being presented. Mark your calendars now and see more details in the next Newsletter. The price will be $65 per person, all-inclusive.

Upcoming Lecture Discussion Series

Beginning in April we will be running a series of wine and cheese receptions (at 5p.m.) followed at 5:30 by lectures and discussion on a variety of topics. (Drink and Think?) On April 26th join Norton Grubb (School of Education) and John Douglas (Center for Studies in Higher Education) as they tackle the prospect of a decline in U.S. educational standards. $15 per person. Stay on for dinner in the Kerr Dining Room.
