Message from the Manager

          Dear Members!
I hope that those of you who can get away are enjoying your summer break. At last we’re having weather that matches the name of the season! And the Club is continuing to schedule events for those of you who are around. I was gratified with the great response to the Indian dinner in June – over a hundred people showed up to enjoy the meal, the company and the music. Thank you for your kind comments. I look forward to cooking this dinner each year and am glad when it is enjoyed. With Karen de Valois and the Space Committee, we are making use of the quiet time at the Club to take care of some upgrading. We have installed new lights over our art displays in the main corridor – now visitors in the evening can see the pictures. We’ve also brightened the dark staircase up to the Seaborg Room with new lights. Karen and I will keep you updated as further improvements are made. As always, you should feel free to contact me or ask for help in any club related matter.

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Jazz at the Club

Another perennial favorite! Year after year jazz aficionados have been returning for the San Francisco Feetwarmers’ annual appearance at the Club, this year on Friday. July 13th. If you haven’t heard this group, come and enjoy an evening of their brilliant classical jazz. Seasoned professionals, the group is known for great arrangements and their driving four-beat rhythm gets the dancers on the floor. Enjoy the Feetwarmers’ performance, along with a special dinner, for an all-inclusive $35. Reserve now: extension 224.

Evening with Fritz Maytag

Another first at the Club. Join us on the evening of Friday, August 24th, for an evening with Fritz Maytag of the Anchor Brewing Company. Everyone in the area knows of Anchor Steam Beer, enjoyed in San Francisco since the 19th century. Few people realize that the company also runs a distillery right across the street from the brewery, where Fritz initiated the production of Juipero Gin (what a name! Junipero Serra plus the juniper berries that flavor gins) and Old Potrero Single Malt Straight Rye whiskey (which is promoted as an 18th-century style rye whiskey). But more important is the winery, the only one in San Francisco that uses grapes from the Maytag’s York Creek Vineyard in the Napa Valley. We’ll be tasting beers and wines, with another great matching dinner. Reserve now! Your editor can tell you from experience that the Club’s special dinners are becoming famous and have been selling out. Make your reservations ($40 per person) at extension 224.

Buffets, Breakfast, Bargain Dinners, Bar Food Service

The popular Friday evening bargain Friday Fish Night ($13.99!) continues during the summer. Come by and try it soon. The Breakfast Special, a bargain at $2.99, will continue all summer, as will the Bargain Dinners: from 5 to 6:30 eat a great meal for only $13.99. See the Club notice board for the menu of the month. The Short Order Service in the Bar is now bringing in people who have to work late on campus and don’t have time for a full dinner. The summer specials in the Bar will be $2 tacos on Tuesdays, and half-price appetizers on Thursday. Our kitchen can also provide Take Out Lunches that can be ordered by phone or fax. With enough notice, we can arrange delivery on campus.

Art Show of the Month - July

Eugene Commins is Emeritus Professor of Physics and has been on the Berkeley campus since 1960. Gene pursues drawing and painting as a hobby, and has exhibited his art works at the Club several times in the past. This month’s pictures include sketches made in Italy and Sweden, a drawing of his son David at the age of 10, and several oil paintings.

Golden Girlfriends Lunch

The first meeting of the coming academic year for this group will be on Tuesday, August 14th. All surviving spouses of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951

Employees of the Month

We are reinstating our Employee of the Month program and have already selected two winners. The May Employee of the Month was Marco Carranza and for June it was Keson Thammavong. Please watch for their nametags and congratulate them for their good work.
