Message from the Manager
Dear Members!
The new academic year is about to begin and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus and enjoying the Club.
We’ve been busy over the summer with special events for those of you who have remained in Berkeley during that time, as well
as weddings and other outside events.
One big physical change – new lights in our main bar. One member always referred to the old ones as Round Table Pizza
lights! Come in and see the replacements. See below for some of the special food services available in the bar, especially
the $2 tacos on Tuesdays and half-price appetizers on Thursdays. The House Committee is also working on replacing some
carpets and upgrading other facilities. I’ll keep you informed as things start to happen.
As always, you should feel free to contact me or ask for help in any club related matter.
Evening with Fritz Maytag
Join you friends on the evening of Friday, August 24th, for an evening with Fritz Maytag of the Anchor Brewing Company. This will not be a sit-down dinner as indicated in last month’s Newsletter. The party will gather for a reception at 6p.m, followed by a talk from Fritz. Then will come a tasting of beers and wines at various stations with reception-style food at each place – a testimony to our chef’s creativity. Everyone in the area knows of Anchor Steam Beer, enjoyed in San Francisco since the 19th century. Few people realize that the company also runs a distillery right across the street from the brewery, where Fritz initiated the production of Junipero Gin (what a name! Junipero Serra plus the juniper berries that flavor gins) and Old Potrero Single Malt Straight Rye whiskey (which is promoted as an 18th-century style rye whiskey). But more important is the winery, the only one in San Francisco. Fritz uses grapes from the Maytag’s York Creek vineyard in the Napa Valley. Reserve now! Your editor can tell you from experience that these special tasting evening are becoming famous and have been selling out. Make your reservations ($40 per person) at extension 224.
Buffets, Breakfast, Bargain Dinners, Bar Food Service
The popular Friday evening bargain Friday Fish Night ($13.99!) continues during the summer. Come by and try it soon. The Breakfast Special, a bargain at $2.99, will continue all summer, as will the Bargain Dinners: from 5 to 6:30 eat a great meal for only $13.99. See the Club notice board for the menu of the month. The Short Order Service in the Bar is now bringing in people who have to work late on campus and don’t have time for a full dinner. The summer specials in the Bar will be $2 tacos on Tuesdays, and half-price appetizers on Thursday. Our kitchen can also provide Take Out Lunches that can be ordered by phone or fax.
Lecture Series Resumes
Last year we reestablished our tradition of early evening lectures by distinguished Berkeley faculty and other specialists. The first of the academic year will be on September 20th. Jerry Lubenow, now retired from his position as Director of Publications at the Institute of Governmental Studies, will be leading a lecture/discussion on the presidential campaign. More details in the September Newsletter. Come for illumination at 5:30 p.m – and a wine and cheese reception – all for $15. Reserve now.
Art Show of the Month - August
This month’s artist comes to us on the recommendation of Professor Cynthia Innis of the Art Practice Department. Joe Halperin, physician and oncologist, has been studying here at Cal with Professor Innis for over a year now. “I have found that I could move my intense feelings arising from my work as a physician to a more concrete and tangible and viewable format…. I love taking what I see or experience and then let color, emotion and imagination move me to express my personal reality. I leave it to the viewers to find their story”. Joe has also studied at CCA in Oakland, and at Anderson Ranch in Colorado. Professor Innis praises his mixed media abstract paintings as full of color, humor and excitement.
Golden Girlfriends Lunch
The first meeting of the coming academic year for this group will be on Tuesday, August 14th. All surviving spouses of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951
September Wine Tasting on the Glade
The seasons roll round. Now is the time to mark your calendars for the fall wine tasting on the Glade on September 14th. Dozens of wineries set up tables where you can find new favorites from familiar winemakers, or discover unsuspected pleasures from wineries you may never have heard of. All with the opportunity to place orders at special Club prices. After the tasting (beginning at 5:30 p.m.) enjoy a great dinner and live music. All for $42 per person all-inclusive. Reserve now at extension 224.
