Message from the Manager

          Dear Members!
One of our most popular return events, the annual evening with Tom Bopp, once again drew a big crowd to eat, drink, listen and sing along. But the Events Committee is always trying to reach new audiences among our members. Our first lecture discussion evening for 2007 promises to be very interesting. Why not try it and join your friends for more discussion in the Kerr Room over dinner after the lecture? And of course in May come two more of our big events: the Mothers’ Day brunch and the spring wine-tasting. There are still spaces available for the brunch, but get your reservations in as soon as possible. I want to thank our staff, who work very hard to make these large events run smoothly, while always having a smile for our members. Several members have expressed appreciation for the improved lighting in the back hallway. I personally appreciate your feedback, so please feel free to contact me at any time

- Felix Solomon, Manager

Lecture Discussion Series – Is America Losing its Edge in Education?

Beginning this month we are running a series of wine and cheese receptions (at 5 p.m.) followed at 5:30 by lectures and discussion on a variety of topics. (Drink and Think?) On April 26th join Norton Grubb (School of Education) and John Douglas (Center for Studies in Higher Education) as they tackle the prospect of a decline in U.S. educational standards, and its implications both nationally and internationally. $15 a person. Plan to stay on for dinner afterwards in the Kerr Kining Room.

Winemaker’s Dinner

The next winemaker’s dinner will be on April 20th and the featured winery will be Calera Wine Company, noted for its pinot noir among other varietals that flourish in the limestone rich soils of the Gavilan Mountains inland from Monterey. Founder and wine-maker, Josh Jensen, spent years in France studying all aspect of winemaking. Thirty years ago he selected the site of his vineyard and winery and started to produce wines on the patter of those he had grown to love in Burgundy. He is one of the few American members of the Geneva-based Académie Internationale du Vin. As usual, our chef will prepare a special meal to compliment the wines being presented. Reservations to this event are going fast, but we may start a waiting list. The price will be $65 per person, all-inclusive.

Golden Girlfriends Lunch

This group continues to meet bimonthly throughout the academic year. At the April 17th (note change of date!) meeting, we have a special program. Susan Snyder from Bancroft Library will talk about her latest picture book entitled Past Tents, all about the history of recreational camping in California. All widows of Club members are eligible to join this welcoming group. Lunch costs $17, with an extra $5 charge for wine. Current members will receive notification of the meeting by mail. Others should not hesitate to call for more information: Phyllis Schafer at 510-704-9951.

Annual Meeting and Elections

By now you have received your ballots for membership on our Board of Directors and have voted. Results will be announced at the annual meeting, to be held at noon on April 4th. At this time the Board and Management will report on the running of the Club and share financial information on the past year. Next month we will show new members of the Board and officers of the Club.

Mothers’ Day Brunch

On May 13th the Club once again offers its celebration of maternity-a day of wine and roses. Corsages and champagne. A delicious buffet. Wnadering musicians. What better can you do for your mother (or the mother of your children, or your best friend’s mother, or your best friend who’s like a mother to you – or even the ultimate guilt trip: for your children)? There’s no place in town that offers the relaxed charm of this event. Get your reservations in soon. Price: $40 per person. Children 5 to 10, $20. Reserve at extension 224.

Parking for Club Events

We are sorry to have to remind you that changes in the University’s paring policies mean that we can no longer offer free parking for Club events. Parking is still available in the structure across Bancroft from the Art Museum, but at the cost of $10. You can arrange for parking at the time you make your reservations, or, for major events like the Mothers’ Day brunch, buy a permit from the attendant at the structure. Check with the reservations clerk, Mayra, at ext. 224

Food Services

We’re continuing our early-bird Bargain Dinners from 5 to 6:30 on Mondays through Thursdays, with special fish meals at the same price on Fridays – a great pre-show meal for only $13.99. Reservations at 540-5678 extension 0. Take advantage of the new heart healthy offerings at both lunch and dinner in the Kerr dining room, as well as changing wine-by-the-glass selections in the bar. We also offer informal, light meals in the Bar on weekday evenings. Breakfast in the Kerr Dining Room continues to be the best breakfast bargain in Berkeley. Our kitchens can also provide Take Out Lunches that may be ordered by phone or fax. With notice, we can arrange delivery on campus. Watch the Club notice board for the special early bird dinners.

Wine Tasting on the Glade

Yes, it is springtime again, and the vintners of northern California will once again be vying to catch your attention with their latest releases and old favorites. Gather a group of friends, and enjoy the tasting on May 18th. The usual pattern: tasting from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., and dinner and dancing from 7 to 9. If you’ve never experienced a wine tasting on the glade, you owe it to yourself to try one. You will get hooked. Cost: $40 per person, all inclusive.

Art Show of the Month - April

This month Sally Mack returns with more of her beautiful photos. Sally is fascinated by wetlands and marshes, and other wild places. Her pictures were taken near Vallejo, on a welands restoration site near Vallejo that is not open to the general public. She uses available, natural light and this time used an antique Hasselblad Camera. For more information, see Sally’s website: www.sallymack.us.
