Message from the Manager
Spring is here and the weather has been beautiful. We start to think of our warm weather events like the Mother’s Day lunch and the spring wine tasting on the glade. Our March winemaker’s dinner was a success. Our new executive chef, Carl Cheney, and his staff did a great job with the food.During these difficult times the bonds of friendship and fellowship become very precious, and we hope to be able to serve you here at the Club with the kind of friendly service that helps us all face the challenges of everyday life with refreshed strength. If you have not been coming to the Club’s evening events or enjoying our lunch and dinner service, try to take advantage of them now, and invite your friends to join you. As you will learn at the annual meeting, the Club continues to do well. Please remember that the management and staff appreciate your support and are always here to help you with your Club needs.
Dinner with Narsai David
The spring Wine Committee dinner on April 11th is very special this year. Narsai David, one of the Bay Area’s best known chefs and restaurateurs, has been working with the Committee, Felix, and our chef Carl on the planning of this special meal which he will host, and at which he will share his ideas about the wines. This event is so special we are limiting reservations. Call soon (ext. 224) for the last few seats available. Only members may reserve, and each member may bring only one guest. Reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7. Cost: $60 per person, all-inclusive.
Evening of Dreams and Fred Crews
On April 24th join us for dinner and lecture discussion with Professor Fred Crews of the English Department. Fred is a distinguished Scholar also widely known for his popular writings (The pooh Perplex and his articles about Freud). He is a lively and erudite speaker, who does not shy away from controversy, particularly on the subject of Freud and psychoanalysis. Your editor could not resist including this sketch portrait of Freud by Dali, and one’s of Freud’s own statements: “ There is no medicine against death, and against error no rule has been found.” However, this squib is not necessarily reflective of what Fred is going to say in his talk entitled “ Who can tell you what your dreams mean?” Reception at 6p.m., dinner at 6:30, and lecture at 7:30. Cost: $25 per person, all-inclusive.
Golden Girlfriends’ Meeting
The next meeting of the Golden Girlfriends will be held on Thursday, April 24th. Members who attend these luncheons will receive notification in the mail shortly. For the April meeting, members will continue on the project they started last time: recounting an event or incident from their lives that now seems remote to a younger generation. Last time we heard about everything from office work in the 50’s to dressing for a date!
Art Show of the Month – April
Marion Brucker’s Show will continue into April. She is a Berkeley artist, a graduate of Smith College who also studied painting and print making in Italy. “ I draw because I like to,” she writes. “ It is the actual drawing of a tree or a flower or a lake or a river that I love. My hand moves over the paper in a drawing dance – sometimes very fast and sometimes very slowly. For me, drawing is a meditation – soothing, center, focusing. Sometimes I also like the picture.”
The Bargain Dinners Continue
Arrive at the Club on any week night between 5 and 6:30 to enjoy a complete meal for the incredible price of $11.95! All meal includes soup or salad, plus desert. Reservations are recommended, especially on basketball game nights and dates when there are major events at Zellerbach. (Still, some drop-ins can usually be accommo- dated.) Remind your non-member friends that they are welcome to use this dinner service. Reserve at 540-5678 extension 0.
Bishop Berkeley Follow-up
You read it in the Newsletter first! In last month’s issue we ran an article by Steve Finacom of the House Committee and your editor concerning Bishop Berkeley and the naming of our city and campus. On Friday, March 28th, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a long article on the same subject. In the interim, the portrait of Berkeley commissioned by Frederick Billings in 1873 had been found – It’s in the University Art Museum’s off-campus storage site. A move is afoot to return the portrait to the campus. Meanwhile, here’s a detail from the picture that has lain hidden for many long years – the only pictorial representation of our city and campus’s eponym in the area!
Happy Hour in the Club Bar
Members are invited to drop the burdens of the day,or gird themselves for the evening ahead of them, by coming to the bar for a break. Meet your friends over a drink 4:30 to 6:30p.m., Monday through Friday. Enjoy complimentary snacks and an offering of specially chosen wines (in addition to the usually available libations, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
Elections and Annual Meeting
Last month, members received ballots and background information on candidates for the Board of Directors. The results of the election will be announced at the Club’s annual meeting – at 12:30p.m. on April 9th in the Howard Room (complimentary coffee and cake). We will also hear about the Club’s finances for the year, and plans for the coming months.
Mother’s Day Brunch
On May 11th plan to bring your mother, the mother of your children, or anyone else who would enjoy a delightful spring brunch with flowers and fuss, to the annual Club Mother’s Day Brunch. Reservation forms were included in last month’s bills, and again this month. Reserve soon, since the most popular times fill up early. The cost is $30 per person ($15 for children ages 5 to 10) plus tax and gratuity. No phone reservations accepted.
Spring Wine Tasting on the Glade
Another spring tradition is coming up. On May 23rd enjoy our spring wine tasting on the Glade from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. Mingle with your friends as you go from table to table tasting some of the finest wines California has to offer. Then it’s into the Club for another fine feast, with music and plenty of space for dancing. This is an event that many members take advantage of to repay social obligations – and to introduce friends to the pleasures of the Club. Cost: $30 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Call 540-5678, extension 224, to make reservations.
Apologies to Our Cartoonist
We apologize to Herb Stansbury for the production problem that led to his cartoon being distorted last month. Herb, it’s being published again, in its full glory! We are probably the only faculty club in existence with its own cartoonist and an ongoing series of campus related cartoons. We’ll be publishing a profile of Herb in an upcoming issue.
Reservations for Club Events
Members are used to being told to “call extension 224” to reserve places at Club special events. The voice at the other end of the line is our ever-courteous reservation clerk, Mark Davis. He patiently maintains and changes lists, always with the same quiet competence. Thank you, Mark.
Breakfast at the Club
We would like to remind you that the Club provides a good setting for quiet breakfast meetings, Monday through Friday from 7 to 10 a.m. in the Kerr Dining Room. Of course, you don’t have to be having a meeting to take advantage of this service! Unwind from your commute or walk to campus with a newspaper over a bite to eat and some of our always-fresh coffee.
