BISHOP GEORGE BERKELEY DINNER

A Sesquicentennial Celebration

Join in a celebration of the sesquicentennial of the naming of our campus for George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne. 150 years ago (May 24, 1866) Trustees of the College of California chose the name “Berkeley” for their planned campus site.

Trustee Frederick Billings had observed the magnificent view over the Bay and out the Golden Gate and recalled Bishop Berkeley’s prophetic early 18th century poem about the creation of a new age of learning and the arts in the Americas. Berkeley himself had sailed to the American colonies in 1728 in an effort to found a new college. He did not succeed, but his vision for “Time’s noblest offspring” eventually came to pass here on our western shores.

Hear the inspirational poem read and enjoy brief remarks from knowledgeable speakers about how the name was chosen, and on the themes of George Berkeley the Philosopher, the Churchman, and the Irishman.

Come join in the good cheer and fellowship, and help, in the words of the poem, continue “the good and great inspiring epic” of George Berkeley’s historic connection to our campus and community.

Price: $45, including wine with dinner. Make your reservation online or at 510-643-0834.
