A
UC Berkeley professor of Molecular and Cell Biology
and
winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
, Randy Shekman will join us for a special talk. Professor Schekman will discuss his role in revealing the machinery that regulates the transport and secretion of proteins in human cells. These discoveries explain a fundamental process in cell physiology and have led directly to the biotechnology industry's ability to coax yeast to release useful protein drugs, such as insulin and human growth hormone. Schekman’s findings have helped us understand conditions such as neurological diseases, diabetes, and immunological disorders. He is currently investigating a possible link to Alzheimer’s disease.
