News & Events

The Faculty Club is the site of numerous events, both private and public, which are too many to publish.  For example, the UC Berkeley Career Center reports that 90% of campus recruiting events are held at our facility.

Monthly Art Exhibit  – Beth Burnside

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Beth Burnside pursued a career in science and administration until her retirement from the University of California Berkeley in 2009. Since then she has been pleased to be free to pursue her long neglected interests in Art and Photography. She received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at the University of Texas, Austin in Developmental Biology and Cell Biology – with an emphasis on morphology and electron microscopy. She has from the beginning been drawn to form. After stints in the Netherlands, Harvard University, and Harvard Medical School, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and then in 1976 moved to Berkeley. Before her retirement in 2009, she served as Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, Dean of Biological Sciences (1983-1990), and Vice Chancellor for Research (2001-2009).

Her work as a collage artist, photographer, and vision scientist integrates perspectives emerging from her career as a biological researcher and teacher. Her research was directed toward understanding the mechanism and regulation of the elongation and contraction of rod and cone photoreceptors in response to changes in light condition and circadian signals, a beautiful example of the execution of cell function by elegant changes in cell form. As a morphologist with a life-long reverence for form, living organisms, and landscapes—both exterior and interior—she is fee in the medium of collage to explore not only what is seen, but also what may be suggested.
